I warmly invite you to discover my art in a preview of the upcoming exhibition "Amazing Grace" as part of the honart.mp4 event. This presentation is more than just a compilation of images; it is a dialogue between art, spirituality, and humanity.
The title of this exhibition is inspired by the hymn of the same name, one of the most sung spiritual songs in the world, written by John Newton, a former captain of a slave ship who found God in his time of need. His transformation and subsequent commitment to fighting against slavery remind us that there is always a higher power in life that encourages us to achieve the impossible. This amazing grace empowers us in the existential moments of life, and trust in it is deeply rooted in our humanity.
In my work, I interpret this concept as a universal force that drives us to pursue our dreams—even when we often do not believe that we can achieve them. For me, this grace embodies a humble and grateful wonder at life. In the exhibition, I have captured moments from various cultural and religious contexts to demonstrate that this experience of being touched is a boundless, deeply human phenomenon. The photographs were taken in Kolkata (India), Oaxaca (Mexico), Arles (France), Old San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Munich (Germany).
In an impressive preview at M-Yard in Munich, I had the opportunity to present my large-format images (1x2 m) in an unconventional way across 1800 m² of exhibition space. To reflect the temporary nature of this pop-up exhibition, I decided to attach black metal profiles in front of the enormous windows. I secured my images to these profiles with clothespins, creating the impression that they have just been hung out to dry after emerging from an analog developing bath. This visualization emphasizes the provisional character, fragility, and transience of the moment while relating to the concept of 'Amazing Grace.' Everything is in constant flow, a "work in progress," and is never finished.
Photography allows me to capture these profound emotions. To create a good photograph means experiencing an overwhelming moment of "Amazing Grace." Each of my images is a framed glimpse, a frozen moment in time—a Janus creature between being and seeming. Each photo embodies a "secret about a secret" (Diane Arbus). My photographs tell stories, evoke curiosity, and leave the viewer with questions, rather than providing answers. Musically speaking, one might say my images move in the mixolydian mode—somewhere between minor and major, in a tension-filled in-between.
I look forward to welcoming you to this exhibition and exploring with you the touching aspects of life that can be found in both art and music. Let yourself be inspired by "Amazing Grace"!
